Project Overview

The island of Lesbos is right in the middle of the European refugee crisis. Everyone who arrives needs a cup to drink every day. Often this problem is only solved for a short time and disposable dishes are used. With just one small step we can reduce this waste and raise awareness for sustainability. A reusable cup - for every visitor at our community centre!

Improving the situation for fleeing people, stuck on the Island of Lesvos, with our safe space is one of our main goals. A bigger aim has always been to make our project and its impacts more sustainable. This has been done with our One Happy Cups: Since the 24st of October 2019 we give reusable cups to all of our visitors: Everyone gets one, registered in our bank system. Currently we already have given out more than 6,600 cups. The name is written on to make sure that people recognise their cup. The clip helps to keep it with oneself: clipped towards the trouser or the bag. It lies in the responsibility of each and everyone to take care of their own cup.

When we see the cups in use outside of One Happy Family we’re very happy since it means that the people really need it. It nevertheless also leaves us in a little struggle since the reusable cups are more expensive than the paper cups; but bring all the positive side effects:
- Less waste
- People wash and reuse their cups in and outside of our community center, this reduces the risks of transmitting sicknesses by sharing cups.
- Awareness raising about trash reduction and sustainability

These are all reasons why we really want to continue giving out reusable cups for all the people on the Island of Lesvos that visit our community center. For this we need your support!

Thank you in advance for donating! With your help we can continue improving the situation on the Island with reusable cups!

With the first budget target of €7800 we are able to provide every new visitor with a reusable cup including carabiner for three months. It would be great if we could exceed the target and thus drastically reduce the waste of disposable tableware in the long run.

Based on our banking system, which registers all new visitors, and the unit prices of our local retailer for reusable dishes, we expect the following figures:

Reusable cup with carabiner
- 1 cup: €0.80 incl. tax
- 1 Carabiner: €0.12 incl. tax
- Currently we need 140 reusable cups and carabiners per day.
- 140 × 20 days ꓿ ~2'800 reusable cups per month
- 2,800 cups × 0.92 ꓿ €2.576 per month

Reusable plates (with sufficient support)
- 1 plate costs €0.80 incl. tax.
- We need ~700 plates per month
- 0.80 × 700 ꓿ €560 per month

WITH the people - not FOR them!

«One Happy Family» is a community center on the Greek island of Lesvos. Lesvos is, due to the close distance to Turkey, an important waypoint for people fleeing from wars and crises in the Middle-East and Africa. These people stay on the island for many months, as the EU-Turkey deal hinders the continuation of their journey to the mainland. Because of the severe human rights situation in Turkey, they can also not be sent back in most cases. With our center, which is growing steadily and welcomes several hundred people every day, we fill gaps which have been created by insufficient humanitarian aid and lack of governmental intervention.

Our aim is to give a measure of dignity and self-determination back to the thousands of people which are stuck on Lesvos. In the center, there are many projects, which have been built upon request and initiative of the refugees.

The community center is not being built and run FOR the people, but WITH them. Together with people from different nations, volunteers and displaced people, it will become a community. The people from the camps are not only engaged in building and running but also in problem-solving and decision making. That’s how we want to give them back some independence, autonomy and a sense of responsibility. Those people often totally dependent on governmental help and NGOs. Most of them don’t want that. They want to help themselves. Self-determination instead of determined by others.

The project is financed by private donations and partner organizations.

I am convinced that an ecological approach must be lived in our community centre. Reusable dishes are a good start for this. It strengthens the awareness for a sustainable daily life of the visitors in the community centre and is a reliable companion during their arrival and further travel in Europe.

I coordinate the kitchen for about 1000 meals per day and am responsible for logistics. In order not to have to use disposable crockery we are dependent on further support.
